What is faro de la jument?

Faro de la Jument is a lighthouse located on the western coast of France, near the entrance of the Bay of Biscay. It was built in 1904 and is situated on a rocky islet in the Atlantic Ocean, about 300 meters from the mainland. The lighthouse was automated in 1991 and is now remotely controlled.

Faro de la Jument is known for its height and location in rough seas. The lighthouse tower stands at 47 meters and the light can be seen up to 29 nautical miles away. However, during storms and high tides, the waves can reach up to 20 meters high, making it very dangerous for the lighthouse keepers who used to live there.

The lighthouse was immortalized in a famous photograph taken by Jean Guichard in 1989, capturing the enormous waves crashing over the lighthouse and seemingly engulfing it. The photograph has become an iconic image and is widely recognized around the world.

Today, Faro de la Jument remains an important aid to navigation for ships entering the Bay of Biscay. It is also a popular tourist destination, with visitors able to take boat trips to the islet and view the lighthouse up close.
